Usama Mir secures a three-year T20 contract with Worcestershire

WORCESTER: Worcestershire County Cricket Club on Monday confirmed that Pakistan international Usama Mir has signed a three-year contract with the club.

Under the agreement, Mir will represent the Worcestershire Rapids as an overseas player in the 2026 season and will then qualify as a local player for the following two seasons, reflecting the club’s long-term strategic vision.

“The first year of his contract will count towards our overseas player quota, but from 2027 onwards he will be eligible as a local player under residency rules. This move highlights our commitment to long-term squad planning,” the club said in an official statement.

This marks Mir’s second stint with Worcestershire, having played for the county in the 2023 season when he topped both the batting and bowling averages. Although he was set to return last year, visa issues prevented his comeback and he was replaced by West Indies’ Hayden Walsh.

Worcestershire CEO Ashley Giles praised Mir as a “high-calibre” player and stressed that his move to local status from 2027 would strengthen the club’s ability to build a strong squad.

“We’re delighted to welcome Usama back to Worcestershire,” said Giles. “He’s a quality cricketer with the skills and mentality to make a real difference at this level. His progression to homegrown status from 2027 will give us greater flexibility and underlines our commitment to building a competitive side for the future.”

The 29-year-old leg-spinner brings valuable international experience, having represented Pakistan in five T20Is and 12 ODIs. He is also a familiar face in T20 leagues worldwide, featuring in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), England’s The Hundred, and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

To date, Usama Mir has played 156 T20 matches, claiming 178 wickets at an impressive average of 22.94 and an economy rate of 7.70, along with scoring 491 runs in the format.
