PCB Fines Naseem Shah Rs20 Million Over Social Media Controversy

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday imposed a Rs20 million fine on national fast bowler Naseem Shah following a controversy linked to a social media post about Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

In its official statement, the board confirmed that the pacer violated several clauses of his central contract along with the PCB’s social media guidelines. The decision came after a personal hearing conducted by a three member disciplinary committee.

According to the PCB, a show cause notice was issued to Naseem on March 27, 2026, seeking his explanation. After reviewing his response, the committee held a hearing and concluded that disciplinary action was necessary.

Despite submitting an unconditional apology, Naseem was handed a fine of Rs20 million. The board also confirmed that his social media adviser, who had already been dismissed by the player, has now been blacklisted and will not be allowed to work with any players under PCB’s jurisdiction.

The issue originated during the opening ceremony of Pakistan Super League season 11 at Gaddafi Stadium, where Maryam Nawaz attended as the chief guest. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed her and introduced her to franchise owners and players.

Shortly after the event, a post from Naseem’s account on X gained widespread attention. The now deleted post questioned the manner in which the chief minister was being treated during the ceremony.

The comment quickly went viral and triggered mixed reactions across social media and the cricket community.

Naseem later clarified that the post was not made by him, stating that his account had been hacked. He added that the account has since been recovered and the incident was the result of a security breach rather than his own statement.

The PCB reiterated its commitment to maintaining professionalism, discipline and adherence to contractual responsibilities among its players.
