Warner and Hendricks Power Karachi Kings to Dominant Win, Knock Out Gladiators
LAHORE: Karachi Kings strengthened their push for a playoff spot with a commanding victory over Quetta Gladiators in PSL 11 at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday, a result that also ended Gladiators’ campaign.
Chasing a challenging 196-run target, Karachi made it look effortless, cruising to the finish with nine wickets in hand in the 19th over. The foundation of the win was laid by skipper David Warner and Reeza Hendricks, who produced a dominant batting display.
Karachi’s innings began positively as Jason Roy and Warner provided early momentum, putting together a brisk opening stand and taking the score past fifty. Roy’s stay, however, was cut short when Jahandad Khan dismissed him for 20 off 15 balls, ending a 58-run partnership.
Hendricks then joined Warner and the pair took complete control of the chase. Warner led from the front with a fluent knock, bringing up his sixth half-century of the season, while Hendricks matched him stroke for stroke. The duo maintained a steady flow of runs, punishing the bowlers with regular boundaries and pushing the total beyond 150.
Both batters remained in complete command as they stitched together an unbeaten century partnership, guiding Karachi to victory. Warner finished on an impressive 89 not out off 48 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and four sixes, while Hendricks remained unbeaten on 87 from 48 balls, including eight fours and four sixes.
Earlier, Quetta Gladiators posted a competitive 195 for 6 after being asked to bat first. Their innings had a disastrous start, losing two wickets in the very first over as Hasan Ali removed Shamyl Hussain and Khawaja Nafay without scoring.
Recovering from the early blows, captain Saud Shakeel and Rilee Rossouw rebuilt the innings with an aggressive counterattack. The pair dominated the Karachi bowlers, combining for a massive 147-run partnership and taking the total past 100 with ease. Both batters reached their half-centuries during the stand, with Rossouw particularly destructive.
Shakeel’s innings of 57 off 34 balls, laced with nine fours, came to an end when Rizwanullah broke the partnership. Rossouw continued his attacking approach, but was eventually dismissed for a superb 90 off 54 balls, an innings that featured eight fours and six sixes.
Quetta lost momentum in the closing overs as Karachi’s bowlers struck at regular intervals. Rizwanullah picked up another wicket, while Abbas Afridi removed Rossouw and later Jahandad Khan. Hasan Ali returned to complete his spell with two wickets as well.
In the final overs, Dinesh Chandimal provided a late push with an unbeaten 30 off 17 balls, helping Quetta finish on 195 for 6.
For Karachi Kings, Abbas Afridi, Hasan Ali, and Rizwanullah claimed two wickets each, playing a crucial role in restricting the opposition before their batters sealed a comprehensive win.
