LEEDS: England produced a commanding performance at Headingley, defeating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

Pakistan, facing a massive first-innings deficit of 238 runs after England posted 409 in reply to their 171, failed to put up a fight in their second attempt. The visitors were dismissed for just 135 in 37.3 overs.

Resuming at 59/3 after lunch, Pakistan lost their remaining seven wickets during the afternoon session, adding only 76 runs. Mohammad Rizwan offered the strongest resistance, scoring 41 from 39 deliveries to finish as Pakistan’s leading run-scorer.

Shan Masood was the next best contributor with 29, while Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel made 15 and 14 respectively. No other Pakistani batter managed to reach double figures.

England’s pace attack once again proved too strong for the visitors. Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue claimed three wickets apiece, while Gus Atkinson picked up the remaining wicket.

Pakistan’s collapse had begun early in the innings. Archer removed Imam-ul-Haq without scoring in his second over before striking again to dismiss debutant Azan Awais for nine, leaving Pakistan struggling at 13/2.

Abdullah Shafique briefly steadied the innings alongside Shan Masood, adding 38 for the third wicket before Robinson ended the partnership by dismissing Shafique for 15.

Earlier, England had resumed their first innings on 364/8 and added another 45 runs before being bowled out for 409 in 89.5 overs, securing a commanding 238-run lead.

Jamie Smith and Archer initially extended England’s advantage with a 28-run ninth-wicket stand. Khurram Shahzad eventually broke the partnership, removing Smith for 25 from 52 balls.

Archer continued to frustrate Pakistan’s bowlers and was later joined by Tongue, who helped England cross the 400-run mark. Shahzad then completed his three-wicket haul by dismissing Tongue for eight, bringing England’s innings to an end.

Ali Usman was Pakistan’s most successful bowler, recording his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket with figures of 5/95 from 24 overs. Khurram Shahzad finished with three wickets, while Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali claimed one each.

England’s emphatic victory gives them early control of the series, while Pakistan will now have to regroup ahead of the second Test.
